Kanching Waterfalls to Sabak Bernam Homestay to Kuala Selangor Firefly Park | MSS Day3

Do read my adventures on Day1 and Day2 first if you have not already.

CHIN SWEE CAVES TEMPLE

Located in the most scenic site of Genting Highlands, we made a quick stop here after checking out of First World Hotel.

Before the huge project of what Genting Highlands is of today, the late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong had a dream where by a deity came to tell him that he should continue and go on with the Genting Higlands project. Thus, the late Tan Sri Lim promised to build a temple for the deity when the Genting Highlands project is successful. Thus, this was how the Chin Swee Temple came about.

The Chin Swee Temple was actually built on a very dangerous steep and rocky terrain. Thus, it was impossible to use any modern machinery for the construction of this temple. Which is why it took 18 years to complete the construction of this temple.

The Chin Swee Temple is only a 5 to 10 minutes drive away from the peak of the mountain. Do stop by if you have the time and bring along your camera too.

The Chin Swee Temple is certainly one place you must stop by whenever you are in Genting Highlands.

They even have room packages if you plan to stay the night there.

KANCHING WATERFALLS

After many photo snapshots at the Chin Swee Temple, we then made our way to the Kanching Waterfalls. It is located in Kanching Recreational Forest which is somewhere between Selayang and Rawang. Find out its location on Google Map.

There are altogether 7 levels to climb and at each level there will be a waterfall. We were told that we would be going till level 3 but if my memory serves me correctly we only reached level 2 because of time constraint.

So the Kanching Waterfalls is famous for its waterfalls (obviously) and also for the mischievous monkeys.

You might want to be wary of your belongings when you make your visit here. You'll never know when a monkey will snatch you things away from you. Especially food.

If you're planning for a picnic, just keep your food out of sight from the monkeys when you climb up to the falls.

Look at that naughty monkey over there.

Enough of monkey business, let's make our way to the first waterfall.

This would be the first waterfall at Level 1 which is called Lata Bemban. To get to the small leveled area there, you will need to carefully step down a steep slope. One you're down there, you can be that much closer to the waterfall.

We then made our way back up to get to the second level.

City people need to get some fresh air once in awhile. People tend to forget how beautiful nature really is. Take a day off from your busy schedule, look up on directions to this place and head on here to relax. You'll feel much better.

Besides getting to dip your feet into the cooling water, waterfalls are also a great spot for photography. Look at TianChad and Feeq busy snapping away and me busy snapping them.

The photo below would be Lata Terentang, the waterfall on the second level. People usually will be resting here rather than choosing to continue all the way up, as this is the best resting spot as it has changing room facilities here.

I went and google some information about the Kanching Waterfalls and found out that the higher the level the more interesting it gets and have better spots for photoshooting. Though trying to get to the higher levels might be challenging for some.

HAVING LUNCH WITH THE MONKEYS

The time was around noon and the Sun was above our head, so photoshooting will be a little bit tricky. Thus, we went back down to ground level for our lunch.

We were packed back a set of KFC each together with a can of Coke. Before you know it, the monkeys already sensed there was food around and started coming down from the trees. Without some of us knowing, the monkeys snatched our coleslaw, chicken and Coke!

The funny thing is, monkeys do not know how to hold a can of Coke. They grabbed it several times with the can being upside down. So while they were running away, the drink kept on pouring out from the can which in the end none was left for the monkey. Haha! #fail

After finishing our lunch and disposing the rubbish in the bin (do not litter at recreational parks, in fact, do not litter anywhere), it was time for another group photo and then we would be heading off to our next destination.

SABAK BERNAM HOMESTAY

After driving for some kilometers, we arrived at Sabak Bernam which is at the northen part of Selangor and it is bordered by the state of Perak.

At Sabak Bernam, we made our way to Dorani Homestay. For those of you who do not know what Homestay is, it is actually the experience of staying at a traditional village together with the traditional communities. In other words, experiencing kampung life.

Truly a fact, this would be very different from the life we are living in currently. At a homestay program, you will get to experience what traditional communities go through everyday. Best of all, you get to eat kampung food!

THE WELCOMING CEREMONY

Upon reaching Dorani Homestay, we saw that there was a welcoming reception already waiting for us. Some were holding bunga manggar and the older generation welcomed us by playing music with the kompang.

This was my first time experiencing a homestay program and I really did not know what to expect. All I know is, we will be put into care of our 'foster parents'. Will I survive kampung life?

Traditional kuih-muih and chilled water was served as refreshments. Then we were seated for yet another welcoming performance.

First of, we were entertained with a kuda kepang dance. The kuda kepang dance is a traditional Malay dance which has some Javanese culture in it. The bloggers was also given a chance to try to the dance. It was the girls' turn at first which then followed with the guys.

It was then followed by a Barongan dance. Not many of you might know this traditional dance and it has a story behind it. Try to look it up, it's interesting.

MY BAPA ANGKAT DURING HOMESTAY

Bloggers were divided to follow their respective bapa and emak angkat back home.

Citra and I was paired up and we were Encik Mujahri's anak angkat for that period. I hope I got his name spelled correctly.

We hopped onto his car and we were on our way back home which was not very far actually. Say maybe one to two kilometers away?

AT HOME

To my surprise, the rumah kampung I thought of didn't really look much like anything I would have imagined it to be. Fully made from wood and raised several meters from the ground. As a matter of fact, the house was made out of bricks but of course not 100% of the house is made out of bricks.

It has a very spacious living area, a huge resting/TV area, a dining area, kitchen and a veranda. It's something like a smaller version of a bungalow, seriously!

At home, we were introduced to our emak angkat. Had a chat with our bapa angkat and then we went back into our room for a rest. There is a guestroom in the house for people who take part in the homestay program.

Later that night, we had our dinner and then En. Mujahri drove me and Citra back to the Homestay meeting place as there was another place we were heading to that night, which would be the Kuala Selangor Firefly Park.

KUALA SELANGOR FIREFLY PARK

Some of you might have seen one or maybe two fireflies fly by you at night but have you ever seen hundreds of them right in front of your eyes? If you have not, make your way to Kuala Selangor Firefly Park.

In groups of four, we were strapped into our life jackets and then stepped into a sampan where we will be steered along the riverbank near the bushes to take a close look at the fireflies.

Below is a photograph of the fireflies taken with my camera. Not much luck there.

Did you know that a male firefly blinks 3 times per second while the female firefly only blinks 1 time every second?

The moon was shining brightly that night which makes the view of the fireflies less spectacular so they say.

But being the first time for me, it is already spectacular for me.

If you wish to experience the wonderful sight of fireflies, make your way here to the Kuala Selangor Firefly Park.

Take a sampan ride which will cost you RM40/sampan, maximum 4 person per sampan.

Enjoy the experience.

After the sampan ride, we were taken into a small showcase area where they played us a documentary about the Kuala Selangor Firefly Park. We were then given a short explanation by En. Zulkifly Bin Samad. Gathering much info needed about fireflies, we hopped onto our bus once again and made a little detour to have supper!

HAVING SATAY FOR SUPPER

We stopped by Satay Hut, Tangjung Karang for its famous satay. Nothing much to say here. We literally ate satay! I really love the satay they serve here. It juicier and more tender.

THE END OF DAY 3

So after supper, we returned to our kampung house to have a good night's rest as it will be an early start once again tomorrow morning.

This was how I spent my third day during the My Selangor Story 2010 Bloggers Tour. Enjoying nature and living the kampung life.

Do wait for my Day 4 post as it would be a whole new experince, as we will be heading out to Sunway City!

Royal Selangor Visitor Centre to Genting Highlands | MSS Day2

MY ROOMIE, CITRA FROM ACHEH INDONESIA

Citra was my roommate for the first night when we stayed at Carlton Hotel. Citra is very friendly person, kind and humble. Go take a look at his blog to find out more about him.

I was lucky to have him as my roommate. Now I have a friend from Indonesia, a blogger friend. Now that's something special. =D

This picture was taken on the second day after we've bath and gotten ready for the following adventures to come.

Seems like the Pentax camera is very good for camwhoring sessions too!

Oh, and I like his jacket very much!

BREAKFAST OR NO BREAKFAST? THAT IS THE QUESTION

So it was around 7 something in the morning, when we packed our bags to be brought down to the lobby together with us as we were leaving for another destination and also we would be staying at a different hotel that night.

Breakfast was actually served quite late. I was waiting in the room for someone to tweet that breakfast is served but no one really did (or did I missed reading the tweet). I was already hungry and couldn't wait any longer, so me and Citra carried our bags over our shoulder, headed out of the hotel room, towards the lift and went down to the lobby area.

I quickly grabbed a seat, settled down for awhile, then I started to make a beeline towards the food! The food was not really up to my expectation but I can down anything as long as it is edible. However, I do really hope that the hotel's buffet will be more presentable and also food must be served on time!

ROYAL SELANGOR, OUR OFFICIAL SOUVENIR SPONSOR

One final munch on that piece of bacon and I'm done. It's another bus ride to our next destination, the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre.

The Royal Selangor Visitor Centre is located in Setapak Jaya, which is just a 20minutes drive from Kuala Lumpur city centre. It is also accessible through Light Rail Transit where you alight at Wangsa Maju Station (Kelana Jaya Line) and get a taxi there which will cost you about RM3-4.

Upon arrival at the center, we were greeted by the Royal Selangor staff. We were about to be taken for a tour around the building of Pewter.

Firstly, the HUGE group of MSS bloggers had to be separated into two groups because there was just too many of us! My group of awesome bloggers was assigned to Raj. He will be the one explaining everything there is to know about the history of Royal Selangor and the Pewter works.

THE HISTORY LESSON BEGINS

Did you know that the establishment was started in the year 1885? That's like 125 years ago! And it actually came from China, which made its way to Malaya.

Take a look at the mesmerizing photos of the past when Royal Selangor first started but of course it was not called Royal Selangor back then. However, it was represented by four chinese characters, 玉和足锡, which means jade peace pure tin.

These are just some of the pewter items on display. They have a lot on showcase in the Pewter Museum. They even have a huge alligator on display!

And the picture below should be a replica of a mining machine. Any ideas what this is? When I saw this model, the first thing that came into my mind was Macro Shots! Too bad we did not stay in that area long enough for me to get a good angle at it. Maybe next time. =)

 

THE LUCKY MONEY TREE

This was what they used as money back in 'ancient' times.

It is the round coins which a person will pull off the 'stem' to pay someone else. The actual size of this money tree will be something like the one you can see in the above picture. The one in the Pewter Museum. Once all the coins are used up the stem will be melted and then poured into a mold to be reused again.

Pewter has a low melting point of about 225-240 degree Celsius.

I've also heard that by touching this 'money tree', you will be blessed with good luck. So did you manage to touch it?

THE FACTORY TOUR

We had now come to the factory part of the tour but first let us quench our thirst with 100 PLUS served in a pewter cup. The aunty's expression looked so happy and real. It's one of those moments worth capturing on camera.

Take a look below at the huge factory area. Everyone working at their own stations with pewter everywhere. I wonder if the workers would prefer having an air-conditioned factory instead? Not like it is hot or anything, they do have ceiling fans. I'm just wondering.

THE FOUR WORK STATIONS

Then there were these four work stations, with each station showcasing a part of a skill needed when making pewter products.

Below you will see hot molten pewter being poured into a mold or cast. After a few seconds, the molten pewter hardens and becomes a mug handle! She's working very fast too!

Next would be the polishing station, where 'money trees' get polished and so does engraved pewter cups. This is done to make sure that the design stands out and looks more attractive. The 'money tree' polishing is done with a 'sanding chisel'? What's that called in malay?

It's a simple tool I learned in Kemahiran Hidup, now I've forgotten the name. *fail*

I don't really know what to call this station, so I'll just call it the 'thinning the cup station'. It's the part where a molded pewter cup is spun round with this machine to make it the correct size (thickness).

Then the picture below shows the hammering process where patterns are made onto a pewter cup using a small hammer. Hammering needs precise accuracy and full concentration. A single mistake then you will have to do everything all over again. Talk about having awesome skills here!

We were given the chance to try out this experience too. A few of us tried it out and well, practice makes perfect.

THE SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS

This is where we get to enrol into one class of learning how to become a Pewtersmith. Also known as The School of Anger Management. If you guys are having some anger problems, don't waste your money on some expensive anger management therapy, come to The School of Hard Knocks! I'm sure it'll solve your problem just fine. =)

The School of Hard Knocks actually allows us to make our very own pewter souvenir which we can take it back at the end of the class. Using only basic tools, like how it would have been made in the late 19th century, we were supposed to hammer our initials or words into a pewter plate.

Then using the mallet, we knocked that piece of pewter into a specialized mold, if done correctly, it will eventually turn into a pewter bowl.

Look at all the future Pewtersmiths hard at work. And the sound which came out from all the knocking was music to my ears. Haha! Just imagine how it would sound like with almost 30 people hammering one piece of pewter plate onto a hard piece of wooden mold.

After minutes of hard knocking, this was how my bowl looked like in the end.

Perfect isn't it?

I wonder if Royal Selangor will hire me as their Pewtersmith? *Laughs out loud*

 

THE MELON TEAPOT

After a hard day's work, we were all taken into another area for some light refreshments where we were served sandwiches, cakes and a choice of coffee or tea. I had already told you that we were always eating during this tour.

We were then greeted by Datin Paduka Chen Mun Kuen who was the director of Royal Selangor. She was also the granddaughter of Royal Selangor's founder as well!

She told us a story about this 'lucky' melon pot which found its way back to the family.

You can se me receiving a certificate from Datin herself, signifying me completing my masterpiece at The School of Hard Knocks.

Thank you Datin! And thank you Royal Selangor for welcoming us and having us at the Royal Selangor Visitor Center. I've gained experience at pewtersmithing that day!

WE WERE ON THE ROAD AGAIN

*The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round* Our next stop would be Genting Highlands, City of Entertainment! Many of you might be thinking, why are we going up to Genting Highlands when it is in the state of Pahang?

I'm sure what you do not know is, a part of Genting Highlands is also situated in the state of Selangor and that would be the Highlands Hotel. So technically speaking we are still having our adventures in Selangor! =D

RESORT WORLD GENTING, OUR OFFICIAL RESORT FOR MSS

We unloaded our bags at The First World Hotel as that would be the hotel which we would be staying in that night. Resorts World Genting was our official resort for the tour. Then we made our way towards Hotel Genting for the welcoming ceremony by and also for our lunch together with YB Elizabeth Wong, the Selangor EXCO for Tourism, Consumer Affairs and the Environment.

You really can't miss it when Tabby the tiger and Allie the elephant come out to greet you. They look so cute! The last time I've seen these mascots in Genting Highlands was when I was still young. So this time, I just had to take a photo with these two.

 

WELCOMING YB ELIZABETH WONG

We really appreciate YB Elizabeth Wong for coming out to have lunch with us despite of her busy schedule.

Without further ado, we had a huge group photograph taken together with YB Elizabeth Wong.

We were then on our way to Coffee Terrace, as our lunch was already waiting for us.

SUPERB LUNCH AT COFFEE TERRACE

Welcomed by the emcee, Amelia, we then took our seats. Fresh and cooling air was already seeping in through the windows. Genting Highlands is just the place you want to be if you want cool and refreshing air.

Dato' Anthony Yeo gave us a short welcome speech and also told us more about Genting Highlands. After that we were also addresed by YB Elizabeth Yeo.

At the end of the luncheon we were each presented with a goodie bag from Resorts World Genting.

Something seemed different when I stepped into the room. I didn't get what was different at first until a few seconds later...

 

It was BIGGER!

After lunch, we were invited into The Visitor's Galleria by My, Philip for a short talk about how Genting Highlands came about.

 

THEME PARK TIME!

The time we've all been waiting for, getting our blood pumping at the theme park rides!

So me, Tian Chad, Thristan, Nicole, Denise and Jing Yi gathered together and made our way to the Outdoor Theme Park.

Just as we reached an area without a roof on top of our heads, we saw rain! Oh no~

To wait for the rain to stop, we headed over to the Patio for our welcome drinks.

We started of with the Euro Express in the Indoor Theme Park and when the rain stopped, we headed out to the Outdoor Theme Park for more challenging rides.

Check out the video that TianChad.com recorded. I did not bring my camera along, so there won't be any pictures from me at the theme parks.

I had an awesome time at the theme park and I hope that we would be able to do this again!

THE PAVILION

Besides the other goodies Resorts World Genting gave us, they also gave us FREE ENTRANCE to one of these shows in The Pavilion! We were to watch DAZZLE that night and had a DAZZLING experience! We were not only given free entrance but we were also given VVIP seating! Right at the front of the stage! Is that awesome or what?!

And that's not all, as you know, in shows like this, the audience were not allowed to take photographs or videos in any format. However, we the bloggers was given SPECIAL PRIVILEGES to do so!

Now tell me, is Resort World Genting great or what?! They are AWESOME!

Who did great umbrella magic tricks! He made umbrellas pop out of thin air! Also not forgetting a wonderful performance he put on when he pulled Spectre up on stage to 'teach' him how to make a tissue disappear! That really gave me a good laugh!







Sonny Fontana – Hand Shadow (from Venezuela)
Entertaining us with cool hand shadows. I truly enjoyed it when he did hand shadows of famous people and celebrities.








Duo Presto – Quick Change Act (from Brazil and Ukraine)
This is just one of the tricks which I will never know how they do it. They will amaze you by changing clothes in a split second! It simply defies all laws of science if you manage to watch their act. If only girls can change this fast eh?








Statue of Jerome Murat (from France)
Be mesmerize by the wonderful performance of the Statue of Jerome Murat. A show which you simply much watch to appreciate it.













14 Dancers (from Ukraine & Belarus)
Last but not least we have the 14 dancers from Ukraine and Belarus dancing with their colourful costumes to the music. A very spectacular show indeed!

You certainly must at least watch one show at The Pavilion some time in your life. It will be worth it. I'm sure because I've got the chance to watch the show courtesy of Resorts World Genting! Thank you!

ONE AMAZING PERSON

Later that night, me Tian Chad and Nicole bumped into Charles Gluck who was playing the Statue of Jerome Murat. He is a great person, very friendly and very tall too! Haha! It feels great to meet someone of great talent. I do hope to see you perform some time soon in the future! It was a great show that night.

THE END OF DAY 2

I truly enjoyed myself today. One of the best yet! I managed to improve my skill in pewtersmithing and had a VERY ENJOYABLE time at Genting Highlands! Thank you for the VVIP treatment!
